Maven Goals

A goal represents a specific task which contributes to the building and managing of a project. It may be bound to zero or more build phases. A goal not bound to any build phase could be executed outside of the build lifecycle by direct invocation. The order of execution depends on the order in which the goals and the build phases are invoked.

Below are some of the phases and default goals bound to them:

  • compiler:compile– the compile goal from the compiler plugin is bound to the compile phase
  • compiler:testCompile is bound to the test-compilephase
  • surefire:test is bound to testphase
  • install:install is bound to installphase
  • jar:jar and war:war is bound to package phase

Build Configuration for Failsafe Plugin Goals:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<project xmlns=""

The Failsafe Plugin goal can be invoked by calling the verify phase of the build lifecycle.

mvn verify
